Field laboratory expert for outbreak response: virology (m/f/d)


The Virology department of the BNITM is focused on tropical hemorrhagic fevers. The department also provides laboratory support in outbreak situations through the European Mobile Laboratory program of the BNITM (EMLab, http://www.emlab.eu/), the Global Outbreak and Alert Response Network (GOARN) of the World Health Organization (WHO), the Epidemic Preparedness Team (SEEG) of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and the Global Health Protection Program of the Federal Ministry of Health (BMG). We are looking for a diagnostics laboratory expert to join our operational team to support field missions and laboratory capacity building in outbreak situations. The person will work in an interdisciplinary team with other laboratory field experts. The person is expected to be based in Hamburg and to travel worldwide as per mission request.
 

Your tasks:

  • Perform training on laboratory diagnostics or surveillance of emerging viral diseases (PCR, RT-PCR, ELISA, rapid diagnostics tests etc.)
  • Develop training curriculum and educational materials including online materials
  • Develop, validate and implement new diagnostic procedures
  • Work with viruses of risk groups 2, 3 and 4 in the field
  • Prepare, order and maintain stocks of reagents and supplies for trainings
  • Ensure up-to-date documentation and post-mission reporting
  • Participate to the development and maintenance of standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Purchase, ship and export of laboratory items to partner countries
  • Deploy to country of operation on short notice (less than 48 hours) upon request
  • Spend cumulatively 6 months per year (divided in several missions) abroad
  • Work in an interdisciplinary and multi-national team

Your Profile:

  • Technical assistant (MTA, BTA) or biology laboratory technician or equivalent education including BSc or MSc in Virology, Life Sciences, Biology or any other related field or MD
  • Work experience in diagnostics laboratory
  • Proficiency in PCR, molecular biology and immunoassays techniques is required
  • Proficiency in handling risk group 2 and 3 pathogens required, risk group 4 would be an asset
  • Experience in drafting and implementing SOPs and training programs, preparing presentations and performing hands-on training of laboratory staff
  • Experience in working in resource-limited settings and/or in the field
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively in a multi-disciplinary and multi-national team and with external collaborators
  • Tropical suitability
  • Willingness to deploy in emergency situations (outbreak response) and to locations with poor infrastructures
  • Good oral and written communication skills in English is required; French and/or Spanish would be a strong asset
