Research Computing & Infrastructure Architect (w/m/d)
Why this is your job:
In this key role, you will actively shape the future research and IT infrastructure of the Institute. You will design innovative solutions for scientific computing and the digitalization of administrative processes, evaluate emerging technologies, and establish the technical foundations for modern research and efficient administration. Working closely with researchers, administrative departments, and the IT team, you will drive topics such as High Performance Computing, Research Data Management, and Artificial Intelligence, taking ownership of introducing new technologies into productive operation.
What you’ll do:
- Design, develop, and continuously evolve the Institute's core IT and research infrastructure.
- Analyze scientific and administrative requirements and develop innovative solutions for data-intensive research and business processes.
- Evaluate and introduce new technologies, particularly in the fields of High Performance Computing (HPC) and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
- Design, implement, and further develop central infrastructure platforms and services, including networking, storage, virtualization, web services, email systems, databases, and application servers.
- Plan and implement technical measures to ensure information security, high availability, performance, and scalability.
- Prepare technical concepts and specifications and contribute to procurement processes, tenders, and infrastructure projects.
- Advise researchers and administrative units and coordinate the work of external service providers.
What you bring:
- A university degree in Computer Science or a comparable qualification.
- In-depth knowledge and proven experience in the architecture, further development, and operation of complex IT infrastructures running on Linux; experience with research infrastructures is a plus.
- Excellent knowledge of networking, storage, and virtualization technologies.
- Strong expertise in several common Linux server technologies, such as web servers, email servers, and application servers.
- Good knowledge of High Performance Computing (HPC) and GPU computing.
- A structured and self-driven approach to work, combined with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication skills and enthusiasm for collaborating with researchers and IT professionals.
- Excellent written and spoken English and good written and spoken German.
- An open-minded approach and a strong affinity for open-source technologies.
Nice to have:
- Experience working in a scientific or research environment or with digital research infrastructures.
- Knowledge of software engineering principles and practices.
- Experience with Research Data Management (RDM).
- Knowledge of DevOps methodologies and tools.
- Experience with AI infrastructure and platforms.
